QUEERIOT 2011! |
Queeriot 2011 is a radical convergence in Kingston from July 8-10 to bring queers together across lines of difference. Kingston is home to multiple prisons, a military base, and an elitist university. It is also the birthplace of the white supremacist, colonial nation called Canada. We’re calling on queers to cum together to disrupt this shit. Our skills, knowledge and bodies are weapons in this fight. |
To everyone who is confused about the disappearance of our facebook event: Queeriot is still happening! Some ass-wipe reported us to facebook as ‘spam’ and our event page got disabled. We are currently in the process of trying to get it re-enabled, but in the meantime please don’t fret! We’re still happening, same time(s), same place(s).
For a listing of Queeriot events, check out our events page. For information about or workshops and workshop schedules, check out the workshop page.
Also: WE ARE STILL SEEKING VOLUNTEERS! And we can’t message you all, thanks facebook. Please contact us at queeriot2011@fire-storm.net to offer your volunteer talents. Much love.
See you all tomorrow!
Queeriot is excited to be offering childcare throughout our workshops and film screenings.
We will also be offering childcare for the kickoff party at The Grad Club on Friday night, however we would like folks who need childcare to contact us by Thursday if possible so that we can arrange proper accommodations as the night is sure to be a late one.
Contact us at queeriot2011@fire-storm.net !
Queeriot regrets that our attempts to book an ASL interpreter for the convergence have thus far been unsuccessful. We have a certain amount of funds, but not enough to account for the terms and fees CHS requests for assignments of this duration. We are looking for folks with ASL interpretation skills who are willing to interpret during workshops. We will pay you cash.
We apologize that we fucked up.
If you are interested, please email us asap at queeriot2011@fire-storm.net.
To close out Queeriot, join us for a relaxing evening of amazing short films, popcorn and cuddles. We’re really fortunate to be able to show three fantastic short films…
A personal and poetic exploration of the word ‘fat’ as a young filmmaker explores her relationship with her body by exploring other people’s relationships with her body.
“Do you think I’m fat?” is a hard question to pose and a hard one to answer. Fat is a sensitive, personal documentary that boldly confronts the uncomfortable issues it raises.
want, most famously, is Loree’s internationally screened, award-winning short film.
In her words, “want is a multi-layered video exploring the topic of sex and disability. There are few videos that deal with this topic, fewer that delve into the world of explicit sexual representation, and still fewer that do so from a queer perspective. In want I use sexually explicit images and everyday moments showing people with disabilities as not just sexual but as sexy. In exploring the question “what is sexy?” I reframe sites of shame as sites of pride and resistance (personal care relationships, bodies that challenge mainstream notions of beauty and desirability, queer sex, vulnerability, gender transgression, etc). I also suggest unspoken benefits to accessible spaces (i.e. big bathrooms with grab bars) and show them not only as locations of necessity but also as places of pleasure. By posing a complicated, insightful, honest, and sexy image of disability and queerness, this piece works to combat the stigma, fear, and shame that contribute to the desexualization and devaluation of people with disabilities and bodily-based oppression in general. This films seeks to stimulate.”
Set sometime in the future-present Homotopia chronicles a group of radical queer’s dedicated to exposing the trouble with gay marriage, dismantling the State, undoing Empire, while looking totally fierce. Woven into the story of Yoshi’s adventures in love, resistance, and sex, is a critique of the crushing violence of homonormativity and its deadly perpetuation of US patriotism, conservative kinship structures and affective accumulation. Homotopia holds cinematic assumptions hostage through its motley assemblage of never-passing crew. Race, gender, ability and desire are reworked through an anti-colonial take of queer struggle creating a visual rhythm of melancholic utopianism that knows there may be no future but still hopes today is not their last. Love revolution, not State delusion, Homotopia.
Amazing news: some folks in Montreal have organized a 48-person bus to bring people to Queeriot! A spot on this bus will be PWYC to help cover the costs of renting it, suggested donation $20. Huge thanks to the people who put this together. For more information on the bus, please drop an email to queeriot-mtl@riseup.net (NOTE: this email address is only for things related to the bus! It is not checked or managed by anyone on the Kingston organizing team! For all other Queeriot-related emails, please continue to use our regular email address!)

ATTN: Local Queerioters, Friends and Allies!
We need places for out-of-towners to stay during Queeriot, July 8-10. If you have space, please let us know ASAP at queeriot2011@fire-storm.net with either “Looking for Billets” or “Offering Billets” in the subject line.
Hosting folks in your house for a weekend is an excellent way to meet new queers and new friends, and expand your personal and political networks. We anticipate queers from all over southern Ontario and parts of Quebec needing places to lay their heads for the weekend. Spare rooms are grand, but so are couches or spots where folks can unroll a sleeping bag. Please consider letting someone share the roof and/or your backyard (for camping) over your head during Queeriot!
Thanks!

ATTN: Out-of-Towners!
We know some of you might be seeking places to stay in Kingston during Queeriot, July 8-10. If you need help finding a homestay, please let us know ASAP at queeriot2011@fire-storm.net.
Please also inform us of anything you think we’d need to know in order to appropriately match you with a place to stay. What are your access needs? Do you have any allergies you want us to consider? Are you comfortable staying alone, or are you traveling with someone that you absolutely must stay with? Etc.
We cannot guarantee space, but we will do our absolute best to help everyone find places that meet their specific needs.
Thanks!

To both local and out-of-town folks: If you have any reason to believe that your house contains bed bugs or that you may travel with bed bugs, please be upfront either with us or with your billeters and/or homestay! Thank you.
